i can never move to a synthesis lab because they’re going to be like “hey bro aren’t you going to clean and reuse that nmr tube” and i’m gonna be like [HISSING]

i know that some people’s greatest non-instrument expenses aren’t nmr tubes and helium refills but it’s still kind of awkward to wrap my mind around. slamming a tube against the bottom of the instrument and shattering it: hardly worth mentioning for us, “cmon man we only have so many of those” in a normal lab. (they’re about $10 each in bulk, by the way, but more like $25 each if you don’t get them in bulk. SIGNIFICANT difference.)

#please imagine my hissing in the same timbre as a magnet quenching. #“well why not clean and reuse nmr tubes” what if i want to observe the sample inside them again.

it is kind of weird how food inflation is the only type of inflation that hasn’t slowed significantly though. like gas is back to $3.30 for regular in $TOWN, my rent’s only up by $100/mo, durable goods are nearly indistinguishable in price, but my grocery bill has crept up from $60 a week to $75 to $85. what’s up with that.

Grocery inflation is weird. My bills have stayed fairly close to flat recently, proportionally, but my partner eats lots of expensive (relatively) prepackaged foods and I think what may be happening is that premium goods aren’t shifting so much but mid-range goods and produce/fresh are still rising.

Yeah I think that’s the case. I cook a great deal, but when I don’t cook, I eat mid-range frozen foods, so I suppose under this theory I’ve been pinched from both sides?

i posted this aug 9th last year and it’s just gotten WORSE

planning a maximalist dream computer build is conceptually very funny when you’re not a mainstream gamer but you do use a lot of academic software because it goes like
-intel i7 of whatever the current gen is that year
-3060 or 3060ti
-128 GB RAM
-4 TB storage space

#i really just can't imagine current gen amd processors or nvidia gpus to ever be worth the cost for me #but memory and storage i'm CONSTANTLY itching for more of and they're both fairly cheap #the rtx is almost entirely for fast fourier transforms

“India on Wednesday [August 23, 2023] landed a spacecraft near the moon’s south pole, an uncharted territory that scientists believe could hold vital reserves of frozen water and precious elements, as the country cements its growing prowess in space and technology.

A lander with a rover inside touched down on the lunar surface at 6:04 local time, sparking cheers and applause among the space scientists watching in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru. After a failed attempt nearly four years ago, India made history by becoming the first country to touch down near the little-explored south pole region and joins the United States, the Soviet Union and China in achieving a moon landing

Excited and anxious, people across India, home to the world’s largest population, crowded around televisions in offices, shops, restaurants and homes. Thousands prayed Tuesday for the success of the mission with oil lamps on the river banks, temples and religious places, including the holy city of Varanasi in northern India.

India’s Chandrayaan-3 — “moon craft” in Sanskrit — took off from a launchpad in Sriharikota in southern India on July 14.”
